Google has launched a website dedicated to COVID-19. It contains a plenty of information and resources all about the decease, giving everyone a one-stop shop to visit when they want to learn more about the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.

Better avoid taking cash out of unguarded ATMs

       The automated teller machine (ATM) might mean cash in a flash for people in a hurry, but for tech savvy fraudsters it is a jackpot in a jiffy. According to Bangalore Mirror, the city police are probing more than 200 complaints of card ‘skimming’ at ATM machines and sleuths say it could just be the tip of the iceberg.

    All the illegal withdrawals were made between February 4 and 7, but police believe that the gang had been active in the city since January 10 this year, and have skimmed away at least Rs 3 crore since then. Following the leads, the police were shocked to discover that in most cases money was withdrawn not from any of the city ATMs, but from those located in London and Bromley in the UK. 

     The modus operandi of the gang is a novel one. Its members operating in the city fit high resolution spy cameras above key boards on ATM machines and skimmers in the card slot. The camera catches the PIN typed by a person withdrawing cash, while the skimmer copies the card details from the original card reader of the ATM. The information is transferred into laptop and later sorted to match PINs with card details.

        “The devices are controlled by a remote, probably by a member of the gang sitting in a car outside the ATM,” Pranab Mohanty, joint commissioner (crime), told Bangalore Mirror. "The gang has targeted ATMs of banks where no guard is posted so that it is easy to install and remove the spy camera and the skimmer. Mostly Canara Bank and Corporation Bank ATMs have been compromised. They are in affluent localities like Jayanagar, JP Nagar and Malleswaram. We suspect at least 10 ATMs in the city have been targeted."

      Once the data is obtained and sorted, it is sent to other members of the gang stationed abroad. They cloned the cards and thereafter, used them at ATMs in places like London to withdraw cash. Police say that the gang is operating in cities across India. In Chennai, at least 29 ATMs have been targeted. 

       CCTV footages recovered from the ATMs have not helped the cops in busting the gang. “Although the targeted ATMs have CCTV cameras, the picture quality is low," a senior police officer said. “Moreover, the suspects wore caps to cover their faces while they entered the ATMs to install the gadgets. They have been careful not to reveal their identity. Once they have got enough data, they have removed the skimmers and the spy cameras.”

    Some of the cloned cards have been used in the city to pay for the services of the local gang members, the police added. 

 

    “Customers who subscribe to SMS alerts know immediately when money is withdrawn from their account. But, those who do not subscribe to this facility will know only when they visit an ATM or the bank. We believe there are several unreported cases,” Mohanty said. 

 

    The city police have written to the Reserve Bank of India alerting it to these crimes and has also requested the apex bank to alert other banks. Police have also asked customers to be careful while using ATMs, especially unguarded ones, and to check their accounts periodically. 

Ignore missed calls from International numbers

A press note from Vodafone,India says, people get missed calls from international numbers and out of curiosity, they calls back. Then you are charged a huge amount in your account. Telecom operator Vodafone has warned its customers to think twice before responding to such “missed calls.’

The operator has been witnessing cases wherein people get missed calls from international numbers and when the user calls back they are charged a huge amount for the call. A Vodafone representative said people in Uttar Pradesh were getting such calls yesterday and today people in Tamil Nadu are receiving these unsolicited calls on mobile phones. Vodafone said it is investigating the matter.

"Some Vodafone customers in Tamil Nadu have been receiving missed calls from international numbers lately. We would like to inform all our customers in Tamil Nadu that this issue has been brought to our notice and we are currently investigating the same," Vodafone India said in a statement.

The company has also asked its over 140 million subscribers in the country to ignore such calls. "We would like to urge our customers to kindly ignore such calls and not call back on those numbers. In case a customer gets such a call, we request them to call the customer care and report the number to us," it said.

"We want to assure our customers that security is our highest priority. Vodafone takes the safety and security very seriously and we have invested considerable resources to continually evolve our system and improve security," the statement added.

• Last year alone, 2,638 teenaged girls, some as young as 13, eloped with ‘beaus’, majority of them delivery men, cable guys, garage mechanics and even rowdies.

    The attraction of opposites, taken to an extreme. That’s the only quick way to explain an eyebrow-raising set of statistics culled from the crime records bureau of the police department.
    Last year alone, 2,638 teenaged girls, some as young as 13, eloped with their ‘beaus’. That would be shocking enough in the light of their tender age. What boggles the mind, however, is that the boys/men of their choosing come, for the most part, from social segments considerably below their own — sales boys, cable TV boys, garage mechanics, even a couple of rowdies.
    Of the 5,484 missing complaints filed in city police stations in 2011, 2,638 were teenaged girls. Of these, 1,356 have been traced so far. The JP Nagar police station saw the largest number of such cases, with 170 cases — 102 of them pertaining to teenaged females — being registered. The JP Nagar cops have been able to trace 61 of the girls so far.
    In 2010, the same police station registered 197 missing complaints, of which 178 were teenaged girls. 

    Take the case of Rashi (15), who comes from a well-to-do family residing in Yelahanka New Town. A class X student, she got into a relationship with Manjunath, a 20-year-old 9th standard drop-out who would come to her house to collect the cable TV fees. Their SMSes turned from being merely friendly to pure infatuation. Knowing her parents would oppose the affair, she took some cash and jewellery from home and eloped with the boy. The cops traced them to Rajasthan; apparently, they had already got married in a temple.
    Ameena, just 14, went missing in the last week of December. The JP Nagar police managed to trace her and her boyfriend, Shakir (14). He works in a garage and is a drop-out from her school. According to the police, the medical report showed that the duo had engaged in sex.
    In another case, an 18-year-old engineering student got a misdirected SMS, called back out of curiosity — and the upshot was that she fell head over heels for the man, a hardened rowdy. Strangely, even after learning of Naveen’s criminal past, Neha refused to end the relationship. They got married in a temple, but she couldn’t adjust to his shabby abode and came back to her parents. Her infatuation saw her elope with him a second time, before sense finally dawned on her and she returned to her parental home. 

    In yet another pointer to the predatory nature of young, unattached urban males, 14-year-old Sakshi ran away with 22-year-old Pramod, a pressure cooker salesman.
    He went to their house to attend to a problem with the cooker and gave the impressionable minor a suggestive look.
    She took his number from her parents and the liaison between the two went on for a month before her parents got wind of it. Disregarding their warnings, she ran away with the man and the duo got married in a temple. The JP Nagar police traced them and reunited the girl with her parents.
    According to a senior police officer who has monitored such cases, only a small number of the girls involved have had the good sense to do an about-turn and return to their parental homes. The rest continue to suffer silently in a socially ill-matched relationship — one that is of their own making.
    As the officer remarked, in several cases it is the girls who shell out money to satisfy the demands of their beaus. Bus stops and temples are known places where the first contact is made and numbers are exchanged.
    “We have seen cases where the parents had to literally touch their daughters’ feet to get them to return home,” he said.

Dengue spreads in city

The number of dengue cases registered at city hospitals including Bowring and KC General Hospital has doubled, thanks to the advent of the monsoon and people being forced to store more water to tide over the water crisis. The BBMP however claims that the number of such cases has come down this month. Bowring Hospital has seen a total of 304 Dengue cases so far. There were 144 Dengue cases in June and 111 cases till July 13 at Bowring. Doctors at the hospital say the number of Dengue cases has increased by 50 per cent this month. 

At Bowring, 49 Chickungunya cases have been recorded. In June there were 20 Chickungunya cases while seven people tested positive for the disease till July 13. KC General Hospital registered 15 cases of Dengue last month. There have been more than 20 cases this month so far. But, BBMP claims cases of Dengue and Chickungunya have dropped compared to last month. According to the civic body, there have been 67 Chickungunya cases so far— 23 cases in June and only 12 cases this month. 

“We have intensified fogging, source reduction activity and also awareness campaigns, wherever there have been Dengue and Chickungunya cases. We need public co-operation as mosquitoes like Aedes Egypti, which spreads Dengue, breed in fresh water. Public should prevent water from collecting in coconut shells or flower pots. They should also clean their water tanks once in four days,” said Dr Lokesh, project director, dengue and chickungunya control, BBMP.

Guide to Reduce Cell Phone Radiation Exposure

Cell phones emit radiation to send voice and text messages to the other caller. Health risks aren’t confirmed, but some (not all) studies of frequent cell phone users suggest increased risks for brain and mouth tumors and children’s behavior problems.

 

To be on the safe side, follow the tips below to reduce exposures.

1. BUY A LOW-RADIATION PHONE

 Look up your phone on EWG’s buyer’s guide. (Your phone's model number may be printed under your battery.) Consider replacing your phone with one that emits the lowest radiation possible and still meets your needs.

 





2. USE A HEADSET OR SPEAKER

Headsets emit much less radiation than phones. Choose either wired or wireless (experts are split on which version is safer) using our cell phone headset guide. Some wireless headsets emit continuous, low-level radiation, so take yours off your ear when you're not on a call. Using your phone in speaker mode also reduces radiation to the head.

3. LISTEN MORE, TALK LESS

Your phone emits radiation when you talk or text, but not when you're receiving messages. Listening more and talking less reduces your exposures.

4. HOLD PHONE AWAY FROM YOUR BODY

Hold the phone away from your torso when you're talking (with headset or speaker), not against your ear, in a pocket, or on your belt where soft body tissues absorb radiation.







5. CHOOSE TEXTING OVER TALKING

Phones use less power (less radiation) to send text than voice. And unlike when you speak with the phone at your ear, texting keeps radiation away from your head.

6. POOR SIGNAL? STAY OFF THE PHONE

Fewer signal bars on your phone means that it emits more radiation to get the signal to the tower. Make and take calls when your phone has a strong signal.











7. LIMIT CHILDREN’S PHONE USE 

Young children’s brains absorb twice the cell phone radiation as an adult’s. EWG joins health agencies in at least 6 countries in recommending limits for children’s phone use, such as for emergency situations only.

8. SKIP THE “RADIATION SHIELD”

Radiation shields such as antenna caps or keypad covers reduce the connection quality and force the phone to transmit at a higher power with higher radiation.
