Welcome back Balram Naidu!

Here comes the answer to ‘Meendum varuvadhu yaarendru therigiradha?’, a question in the poster of Kamal Haasan‘s upcoming film, or films, which will be launched in Chennai on Friday.

According to sources, Balram Naidu, one of the 10 characters played by Kamal in ‘Dasavatharam’, will be an integral part of his next movie, which will be made simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
“The character has been drawn into this script in an interesting manner. And Shruti Haasan will play Balram Naidu’s daughter in this flick,” sources said.

The movie will be helmed by Kamal's long time friend Rajeev Kumar and will be predominantly shot in the United States. It will be jointly produced by Raajkamal Films International and Lyca Productions.
Kamal tweeted recently: “I found a simple and exciting title for my new trilingual MI moving images. The Hindi title came from Saurabhji .The Tamizh from illayaraja”.

Kamal Haasan's next film launch will be live streamed in YouTube

Known for innovations, Kamal Haasan is at it again. The ‘Ulaga Nayagan‘, who will launch his next venture in Chennai on April 29, will stream it live in three languages.
“Inaugural function of RaajKamal productions in Hindi, Tamil & Telugu going live on respective language channels & also Ulaganayagan tube”, updated Kamal on his microblogging page.

The film, which will be helmed by Kamal's long time friend Rajeev Kumar, would go on floors at a function at Nadigar Sangam premises at T Nagar in Chennai.

Interestingly, Ilayaraja has named the movie’s Tamil version, and Kamal has confirmed this. The title is expected to be unveiled on the launch day.

It will be jointly produced by Raajkamal Films International and Lyca Productions. Tipped to be a family comedy drama, the film will have Shruti Haasan in a key role.

Singapore Little India Riot: Sun TV apologises for inaccurate report

A police report has been made against India's Sun TV over its new report on the riot that broke out in Little India on Sunday night.
The report said that the riot was triggered by a female bus driver who had pushed an Indian male passenger off the bus, causing his death in the process.
Sun TV reported this in its bulletin on Monday evening.

The news anchor then said in Tamil that when the other Indians at the scene saw it, they got angry and started to attack the bus driver and the bus. It added that Singaporean authorities and Chinese persons started to attack the Indians, and in the process, two vehicles were torched.
When contacted, police could only confirm that a report was made, but did not elaborate if they will be investigating.

A copy of the report seen by The Straits Times had the details of the person who lodged the report blanked out.

When The Straits Times contacted Sun TV, a man who gave his name as Mr Uma Shankar and claimed that he is the editor in charge of the news section, said he was unable to comment at this point, as he needed to check the facts with the sub-editor who had written the report.

Lawyers in Singapore whom The Straits Times spoke to said it would be difficult to take the television station to task.

Mr Ravinderpal Singh of Kalco Law said: "They are not maligning any individuals. Just reporting incorrect facts alone do not attract any legal liability."

Update:

Singapore's High Commissioner to India Lim Thuan Kuan has written to India's Sun TV Network to ask for immediate corrections to its "erroneous" coverage of Sunday's riot in Little India.

In its news bulletin on Dec 9, the television station said the Indian national who was knocked down by the bus on Sunday was pushed out of the vehicle by the driver. It also claimed that Indian nationals were hiding in their homes for fear of being attacked by Singaporeans and the local Chinese or harassed by the police.

These claims were "entirely false", said Mr Lim in a letter dated Dec 10.

"The deceased had boarded the bus when it was already full. The deceased also appeared to be drunk and he was causing trouble on the bus, even dropping his trousers whilst on the bus," said the letter. "After the deceased was assisted off the bus, he proceeded to walk/run alongside the bus in an unsteady manner while holding onto his pants . He stumbled and fell onto the path of the back wheel of the bus and was run over."

"The inaccurate and sensationalist coverage clearly shows that Sun TV did not even bother to check the facts before reporting on the incident," said the letter. "We are requesting an immediate correction (both online and on broadcast) and for Sun TV to provide the full facts of the case so that your viewers have an accurate understanding of what really happened."

A police report has also been filed here against Sun TV by an unknown person. When contacted, police could only confirm that a report was made, but did not elaborate if they will be investigating.

Viswaroopam banned for 2 weeks by Tamil Nadu Government

Universal hero Kamal Haasan's forthcoming magnum opus Viswaroopam has banned by Tamil Nadu for law and order reasons. On Tuesday, around 30 Muslim leaders from 24 Muslim organizations had met Chennai Police Commissioner and demanded a halt to the film.

Considering all aspects, including the fact that Friday is the holy day of the Prophet’s birthday, the government asked district collectors to suspend the screening of the film for two weeks.
Press conference by Muslim leaders
Muslim groups say that the film could damage social harmony. Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam MH Jwahirullah president said that the film has been hurted their feelings. Federation of Islamic Movements and Political Parties Coordinator Mohammed Hanifa said that the Muslim community is not willing to accept it in any case. Even after removing some footage from the film can not be accepted.

The statement came a day after the film's special screening to the Muslim leaders by Kamal Hassan in respect of thier demand to show the film before its release. Hassan, the director says that the movie is nothing like the feeling of someone getting hurt. The ban for the big-budget film, made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu have been created waves.

Kamal who is in Hollywood to screen the grand premier of 'Vishwaroop' ,  responded that he will take legal course against ban on the screening of his film Vishwaroopam, saying that such "cultural terrorism" should stop.

Once, Kamal too had a taste of political parties trying to dictate film-making when he was forced to rechristen the title of his movie on death penalty from 'Sandiyar' to 'Virumaandi'. That was due to the stiff protest from a dalit party which disrupted the shoot in and around Madurai.

Quentin Tarantino inspired by Kamal Haasan's Aalavandhan / Abhay

The Pulp Fiction director told Anurag Kashyap that he was inspired by an Indian movie with animated violence scenes

So far we’ve always thought of Indian cinema as being a derivative of its western counterparts.

So to hear that one of American cinema’s most influential directors, Quentin Tarantino, director of movies like Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds, has admitted in a conversation with one of our own directors, Anurag Kashyap, that a whole sequence in one of his films is inspired by an Indian film, came as a huge and a welcome surprise.

Apparently Tarantino admitted in a private conversation with Anurag that the celebrated animation-action sequence in Kill Bill was inspired from 2001 Hindi-Tamil film, Kamal Haasan starrer, Abhay.

When contacted, Kashyap says, “Yes, Sight and Sound critic Naman Ramchandran first told me this. So when I met Quentin in Venice I asked him whether the Manga sequence in Kill Bill was inspired from an Indian film and he excitedly remarked, ‘Yes, I saw this Indian serial-killer film which showed violence as animated.’”

Kashyap explains, “There is only one Indian serial-killer film which was made before Kill Bill where violence was animated, and that was Abhay.” Kamal Haasan, who starred in Abhay, has his own take on the compliment. “When I did the animation action sequence 12 years ago it was seen as self-indulgent and odd by a lot of people. Now that it has been endorsed by a filmmaker of such brilliance, critics will be kinder to some of the things I attempt in my films.”

Kamal hopeful in doing a Hollywood film with Barrie M Osborne

After winning hearts and minds in Bollywood and Indian films, Kamal Hassan is now looking forward to take a plunge in Hollywood.

The actor screened his new film Vishwaroopam to Hollywood producer Barrie M Osborne, of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ fame, and the two are now planning to collaborate on a project.

‘My friend Barrie Osborne is coming down and we are planning, so hopefully I’ll be doing something in Hollywood,’ said Kamal Hassan.

Meanwhile the actor-director is gearing up to release his new film Vishwaroopam, a spy thriller made simultaneously inTamil and Hindi. The first look is out.

‘The content of the film is such that it demanded a larger audience, so we made the film in both languages. The basic premise of the film is to get the audience to theatres, so that the people who have invested in the film, including me, can rake in the moolah,’ he said.

The film has an unusual star cast comprising Indian-American actress Pooja Kumar, Tamil actress Andrea Jeremiah and actors Rahul Bose and Sandeep Jamwal. Hassan himself stars in the lead role.

‘I was not looking for stars in the film, I wanted talent. Also a person starring in a role should suit it, that goes for me as well. We chose Pooja after a looking through a number of other actresses. Rahul prepared for one and a half months for his role, working on his look and Tamil accent, Iam very pleased with him,’ said Hassan.
