Vikram’s Deivathirumagal and its striking similarities with a host of films

Vikram in Deivathirumagal and Sean Penn in I am Sam .
Can you see any similarity between the two pictures? If not, read on

Vikram’s Deivathirumagal comes under fire for its striking similarities with a host of films

Critics and viewers alike have lapped up Vikram’s Deivathirumagal, and the boxoffice collections too have been heartening. AL Vijay, one of the most promising directors in Kollywood, has proved his class again. Many say it is one of Vikram’s best films. In short, Deivathirumagal is a film not to be missed.

But how original is the premise and the film? Dig a little deeper, it becomes clear the film has been “heavily inspired” by Hollywood film I am Sam, starring Sean Penn.     The list does not end there. Some sequences have been lifted, or shall we say inspired, from Dustin Hoffman’s Rainman as well. There is more: Deivathirumagal drew inspiration even from the Bollywood film, Main Aisa Hi Hoon that featured Ajay Devgn, Sushmita Sen and Anupam Kher. (Another blatant copy?)

The common denominator of all the mentioned films is that the film’s key protagonist is a grown-up person, but with an IQ below five.
To specify scenes, I am Sam had a similar scene, where the protagonist and his friends visit a shop to buy a shoe for the little one. Likewise, in Rainman, Hoffman would suddenly stop walking on a pedestrian crossing when the signal turns from green to red.

Vikram was seen doing the same while proceeding to the court in the company of lead actress Anushka.
Released in 2005, Main Aisa Hi Hoon had a similar premise. While Ajay was the adult with developmental disability, his daughter (played by Baby Rucha Vaidya) was a five-yearold child living with her dad after her mother (Esha Gopikkar) had deserted them both. In the Tamil film, the girl’s mom dies.
Anupam Kher, the affluent dad of Esha, suddenly stages a dramatic entry (just like Sachin Khedekar in Deivathirumagal) claiming the custodial rights of his grand daughter. A legal battle ensues.
A female advocate enters, who goes all out to defend her client who is a hapless, helpless father. Sushmita Sen plays the role in Hindi, while Anushka Shetty does in Tamil.

Coming to the film’s music, composer GV Prakash has been applauded for his soul-stirring background score.
But it emerges even the music has been ripped off from elsewhere.
The young prodigy is said to have lifted from Roger Miller’s track titled Whistle Stop that was composed back in 1973.

As if this is not enough, it is also being reported that another song from the film Jagada Thom… has reportedly been borrowed from Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan’s album The Truth!
Prakash, reports say, has admitted that the titles were lifted at the instance of the film’s director.

Is Deivathirumagal merely an inspiration or a complete rip-off? We leave it to you to have the final word.
