Why the $35 Indian Tablet PC will never exist - an update to my earlier post 'Indian laptop is world’s cheapest'

This is an an update to my earlier post 'Indian laptop is world’s cheapest'

I republish the article written by Mr.Mike Elgan, ComputerWorld (US).
(Mike Elgan writes about technology and global tech culture.
Contact Mike at mike.elgan@elgan.com, follow him on Twitter or his blog, The Raw Feed.)

Why the $35 Indian Tablet PC will never exist

"India unveils $35 computer for students," says CNN.com. "India unveils prototype for $35 touch-screen computer," reports BBC News. "India to provide $35 computing device to students," says BusinessWeek.
Wow! That's great! Too bad it will never exist. That this announcement is reported straight and without even a hint of skepticism is incomprehensible to me.
India's human resource ministry announced this week a "breakthrough" solar-powered tablet computer that would cost only US$35 in "early 2011." Reports say the tablet was developed at various Indian universities. "We have made the breakthrough and are now ready to capture the market," said Mamta Varma, a spokeswoman for the human-resource-development ministry.
In the first phase of the rollout, a million tablets would be provided to university students. In later phases, the program would be expanded to primary and secondary students. Millions of students would be using these cheap tablets within a year.
Officials even hinted that in the future the price could drop to $10 per tablet.
The project appears to target a similar demographic and purpose as the "One Laptop per Child program, which is still struggling to bring the cost of its non-solar, non-touch screen computer down to its goal of $100.

What's really going on

Because the mainstream media is too gullible, shameless and lazy to report this story with even the slightest hint of skepticism, let me spell out what is almost certainly going on here.
Indian politicians have discovered that announcing technological "breakthroughs" that leverage Indian engineering prowess to deliver computers to everybody helps get press and win votes. It's a cheap gimmick that works because of the gullibility of the media.
While the press pays attention to the Big Announcement, hardly any media outlets notices later when nothing ever comes of it. Why? Because a headline with "$35 tablet" in it brings traffic, eyeballs and readers, whereas a headline with "media duped again" brings only shame. So they go for the glory, but omit the shame.
For example: In February of last year, the Indian government announced a $10 to $20 laptop called the "Shaksat. Like the $35 tablet, the Shaksat had 2GB of RAM, but details on other components were impossible to come by.
It was to be rolled out in 6 months, and was to be used by millions of students across India, transforming the Indian educational system and economy. So where is the Shaksat?
In 1999, a group of Indian scientists and engineers developed a low-cost computer for the poor called the "Simputer. It was a Linux-basedpen-and-touch tablet with text-to-speech capability. The Simputer was announced with great fanfare by the Indian government. The goal was to sell 50,000, but only 4,000 were ever sold.
Are you detecting a formula here? Pandering politicians hold up a prototype and proclaim a "breakthrough." A new computer, developed by students and professors at India's prestigious engineering universities, has "cracked the code" for low-cost computing for the masses.
Very soon these devices will be pushed out to Indian students, transforming the educational levels of the country and providing the tools for Indian technological leadership in the future.
Everybody wants to believe this story. But that doesn't make it true.

Why the $35 Indian tablet will never exist

India itself doesn't build touch screens. They would have to be imported from China or Taiwan. The current price for this component alone exceeds $35. Like touch-screens, most solar panels are also built in China. But even the cheapest ones powerful enough to charge a tablet battery are more expensive to manufacture than $35.
Plus you need to pay for the 2GB of RAM, the case, and the rest of the computer electronics. Even if you factor in Moore's Law, and assume the absolute cheapest rock-bottom junk components, a solar touch-tablet with 2GB of RAM cannot be built anytime soon for less than $100.
More to the point, no country in the world can build a cheaper computer than China can. The entire tech sector in China is optimized for ultra low-cost manufacturing. All the engineering brilliance in India can't change that.
Even if Moore's Law unexpectedly accelerated, and India was miraculously able to build a $35 tablet next year, there would be 100 Chinese companies selling tablets for $20 and the Indian initiative would be pointless anyway.
This is largely what happened with the Simputer. By the time the consortium managed to get the device through the manufacturing process, the open market was producing devices that were far cheaper and better.
So in addition to this latest engineering "breakthrough" announced by the Indian government, they would also have to make a breakthrough in the ability of governments to produce cheaper computers than the open market, an event that has never before occurred -- and probably never will.

The awful truth

The $35 tablet announcement was nothing more than shameless political opportunism. The world's media were suckered (again) -- hook, line and sinker.
The whole affair is a shameful, disgusting spectacle that represents everything that's wrong with politics, the media, and public gullibility in the new idiocracy.
Cheap computers are nice. But what we really need is a little common sense.

Tab Candy - an upcoming Firefox feature

Aza Raskin, the Creative Lead of Firefox, has recently published in his blog that the Firefox interface team is working on a project which will make browser tabs even more powerful.

A prolonged browsing session for a veteran internet user, usually results in the tab bar becoming way too congested. While most of the users are multitasking online, such as messaging/email, social networking, blogging, researching, purchasing, gaming and so on, it is tough to keep a track of which tabs are for what task! Having multiple browsers are a solution, but what if you love your favourite browser too much to work on anything else? Experts may install multiple instances of same browser, or use multiple profiles as a workaround, but let's not get into that - it's just too much of a pain for a general user!
That's where Tab Candy will come to rescue us. This feature will let users manage any number of tabs, dividing into groups, and allow them to open only a certain group of tabs to concentrate on that work. So, no more searching for tabs in an array of 50 or more of them, simply to find a tab you opened a while ago to read later, then got busy on some other page.

It's just a simple click of a button, and the Tab Candy menu will open, showing the thumbnails of the tabs which are currently open. You can then play around making several groups, naming-renaming the groups, resizing, arranging them on the screen, simply do anything with them that will suit you better. Opening a group will open only those tab sets that are associated with it, so that you get the tabs which you need the most, at that point of time; when you are done, move on to the next tab group task you have to do. Searching for a tab/text in a tab will get simplified, as you can be able to search for a string in any of the open tabs, simultaneously. And yeah, it comes with the save (tab-groups and) session feature too, along with an advanced tagging feature (which lets you just write it in, instead of saving the session) to make you find what you are looking for quickly.

as been reported that this feature will make Firefox substantially heavy on resources, more than ever before, but that is not really the case. Well, it's true that Tab Candy will surely make users not feel the need to close a tab, but with spatial memory management, Firefox will not be a resource hog. Moreover, being designed just upon HTML, JavaScript and CSS, this feature will be only as heavy as a simple web app, or even less than that.

Tab Candy is set to release with Firefox 4, but in the meanwhile, PreAlpha nightly builds of Firefox (Minefield) containing the Tab Candy feature are available for early adopters and testers. Watch the video to see Tab Candy in action and for the completed feature sets. While at an early stage of development, it still looks mighty useful, and let's keep our fingers crossed to be amazed by the time it lands!

Dengue spreads in city

The number of dengue cases registered at city hospitals including Bowring and KC General Hospital has doubled, thanks to the advent of the monsoon and people being forced to store more water to tide over the water crisis. The BBMP however claims that the number of such cases has come down this month. Bowring Hospital has seen a total of 304 Dengue cases so far. There were 144 Dengue cases in June and 111 cases till July 13 at Bowring. Doctors at the hospital say the number of Dengue cases has increased by 50 per cent this month.
At Bowring, 49 Chickungunya cases have been recorded. In June there were 20 Chickungunya cases while seven people tested positive for the disease till July 13. KC General Hospital registered 15 cases of Dengue last month. There have been more than 20 cases this month so far. But, BBMP claims cases of Dengue and Chickungunya have dropped compared to last month. According to the civic body, there have been 67 Chickungunya cases so far— 23 cases in June and only 12 cases this month.
“We have intensified fogging, source reduction activity and also awareness campaigns, wherever there have been Dengue and Chickungunya cases. We need public co-operation as mosquitoes like Aedes Egypti, which spreads Dengue, breed in fresh water. Public should prevent water from collecting in coconut shells or flower pots. They should also clean their water tanks once in four days,” said Dr Lokesh, project director, dengue and chickungunya control, BBMP.

People start using bridge over crossing near Whitefield rail station

After putting up with delays for five years while a 42-metre bridge was being constructed over a major crossing near Whitefield railway station, motorists lost their patience when its July 15 inauguration was postponed indefinitely. Instead of waiting for a fresh date, they have begun using the much-needed bridge.
The bridge is on the route used by residents of Kadugodi, Belathur and Hoskote going towards Bangalore International Airport and National Highway 4. Even people from Electronics City and Tamil Nadu prefer this route to reach the airport, as the volume of traffic is relatively less.
But, since almost 40 trains pass through this section, the crossing was turning into a major roadblock. An overbridge was mooted in September 2005. South Western Railway awarded the contract in 2006. Work was supposed to be completed in September 2007. But, work suffered
due to cost escalation and the contractor’s inability to execute the project. Apart from the trains, motorists had to put up with the construction work too.

Railway authorities have no explanation for postponing the inauguration. They are yet to fix a date for the inauguration ceremony. It took five years for the bridge to materialise. It is on the route used by residents of Kadugodi, Belathur and Hoskote going towards Bangalore International Airport and National Highway 4. The inauguration had been scheduled for July 1.

Indian laptop is world’s cheapest

The laptop, unveiled by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, has all the basic features, including a built-in keyboard, a 2GB memory, WiFi connectivity, USB ports and is powered by a 2watt system. The device is likely to be available next year.
The seven and nine inch Linuxbased touchscreen gadget can also be run on solar power, besides the battery operated system. The computing device will support functions like video web conferencing facility, and multimedia content viewing.
The HRD ministry, under whose initiative the computer was designed and developed, hopes to bring down the price to $10 (Rs 470 approx) after the device is mass produced.
Accordingly, the ministry is reported to be in discussions with entrepreneurs, private firms and industries.
    “If more companies decide to
manufacture a similar device, prices will come down automatically,” Sibal said after unveiling the device.
Teams of experts, students and professors drawn from the Indian Institutes of Technology at Kharagpur, Kanpur, Chennai and Mumbai and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, offered their expertise to bring out the device with the HRD ministry.
The low-cost PC fulfils a mission of the government to provide free content to learners.
The HRD ministry undertook the initiative to develop the PC after meeting with lukewarm response from corporates.
One motherboard was reportedly designed by a student of Vellore Institute of Technology and was fabricated at IIT Kanpur. The cost had worked out to Rs 2,209. Thereafter, the processes of customisation helped reduce the price of the device.

City will soon get an animal crematorium

It’s heartbreaking to lose your pet but doubly so when you can’t give it a decent farewell. But Bangaloreans can take heart that the city will soon have an animal crematorium.
BBMP officials said plans for this crematorium, also the first in south India, had been finalised and a 5-acre plot identified at Jalahalli Medi Agrahara. “The project is in the final stage and we hope to complete the process within 15 days,’’ said A K Gopalswamy, engineer-in-chief, BBMP.
Initially meant for the disposal of carcasses of stray dogs or those suspected to have died of rabies, civic authorities now plan to let pet and livestock owners use it too. Currently, such a facility is available only in Mumbai and New Delhi.
The project was originally mooted to tackle garbage issues linked to animal carcasses. Bangalore has no scientific way for disposal of pets, and other stray animals which die in road accidents, of rabies and other diseases.
    Dead pets are normally dis
posed of at sanitary landfill sites while a few are left in distant dump yards.
The new facility will also prevent the spread of dangerous diseases through viruses in dead animals and stem underground water pollution due to the burial of animals.
After consulting environmental experts, BBMP submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the state government. The government gave its nod and paved the way for the BBMP to invite tenders. The facility should be ready by October.
According to the DPR, the cremation facilities will cost approximately Rs 2.5 crore. About 15-20 animals can be cremated every day for a fee ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 1000. Two trained personnel will man it. The BBMP also plans to have dedicated veterinary doctors to conduct a post mortem on animals which die under mysterious circumstances.
Environmentalist S Girish said: “Electric cremation is the best way of disposal as it is pollution-free and it also destroys germs and viruses in the body, if the animal has died due to an infectious disease.’’

Bangaloreans’ mobility is an EPIC headache for EC

Bangaloreans are shifting home so often that it’s playing havoc with the electoral rolls. As far as the Election Commission of India is concerned, Silicon Plateau ranks way below in terms of the electorate having voter ID cards.
The EC recorded only 63% of Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) distribution in Bangalore till January. “The main reason is that the population is very mobile. We have noticed that some persons’ addresses have changed thrice in a year. This has made it difficult for to track the population and issue ID cards,’’ Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said here on Friday. The good news is that over the past three months, EPIC distribution has touched 89%. A long way to go, given that some cities are have already reached 90% and above.
For Chawla, Bangalore has always been a big challenge. “US President
Barack Obama called to congratulate me on completing the 2009 Parliamentary elections successfully. Nevertheless, the performance of Bangalore always disappoints me. This apart, the low voter turnout of 41% in Mumbai in the General Elections was also a disappointment,’’ Chawla, who retires on July 29, said.
Though he lauded chief electoral officers — S Suranjana and R Manoj — for their efforts to record 89.3%
EPIC coverage, Chawla has set a deadline for 2011. The EC has targeted to distribute 714 million EPICs in the next one year. Expressing confidence that the Bihar assembly elections will be smooth, Chawla appealed to political parties to appoint booth level assistants to assist the commission’s booth level officers in preparing a perfect voters’ list.

Iskcon launches spiritual theme park at Bangalore

A towering temple complex atop the Vaikunta Hill off Kanakapura Main Road, complete with theme parks reinventing mythological episodes, 4-D experience theatres, and much more.

Promising to realise all this in 36 months flat, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), Bangalore, is all set to perform the project, “Krishna Lila Park’s” Bhoomi Pooja on Sunday.
At an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore, the Park project on 28 acres of land is definitely on a mega scale. But, Iskcon had to come through a taxing tiff with State Congress Working President D K Shivakumar before it went ahead with the project. Family edutainment According to Iskcon the objective of the grand project, packaged in a ‘family edutainment format’, is to present, preserve and promote the cultural heritage of India as portrayed in the ancient Indian classics, to the contemporary society, in an interesting and captivating presentation.
The idea is to transport visitors to the time and place of the different episodes of the Mahabharata, Bhagavata and Ramayana. Recreated is a scene where King Indra threatened the Vrajavasis to inundate their village because he was angered with their refusal to perform the yearly puja. This is shown with torrential rains, blasts of thunder and lightening and the consequent flooding of the Yamuna, recreated with dramatic effect.
The main temple complex building will be about 360 feet tall, with a viewing gallery at 500 ft level. The Krishna Heritage Tower will house the Sri Puri Jagannath Mandir and the Sri Radha Krishna Mandir. At the 500 ft level, the complex will have the Sri Venkateshwara Sky Temple.
Iskcon maintained that it would raise Rs 350 crore for the project by developing the 42.5 acre land near the hillock as a heritage township. The proposed structuring of the project is to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) consisting of two trusts, the Iskcon Charities and India Heritage Foundation.

Ultimate Competitor of Opera Mini—UC Browser 7.2 Experience Report

Ultimate Competitor of Opera Mini—UC Browser 7.2 Experience Report

From the birth of Opera Mini, it has been standing for the No.1 mobile browser for a long time. However, after 6 years, I think the world is a little bit changed with the entry of another free mobile browser from China, named UC Browser. UC Browser was known as UCWEB, and famous for its fast speed and traffic saving technology, and already has 100 million users.

UC Browser just released its 7.2 international version, many new features had been added in this new version, and here is my experience on it.

1.   Fast n Speed as Always!
Personally, I have all of these browsers installed on my N95 and use whichever one is most appropriate to the job at hand under the network of Bhartl. The time consuming to open each site is listed below:
ult01

ult02
Brief Sum-up: From the above table and chart, you can see that UC Browser got almost the same speed with Opera Mini, and a little bit faster than Opera Mini, left Bolt, Skyfire and Nokia N95 default browser far behind.

2.   How Much Traffic Charge You Can Save With UC Browser?
Be aware of the high charge of traffic for data service, UC Browser introduced a cutting-edge traffic saving technology. According to its official announcement, it can save 85% of the traffic, compare to 80% Opera Mini can do. Here is my test to the Data Compression Rate:
ult03
Brief Sum-up: UC Browser could save even more than 85% of your traffic, which will  save you're a lot of money spend on your data service.

3.   Sharing—The Core Part of SNS
“Sharing” is one of the most important functions in the Mobile Internet. It can not only reduce the churn rate, but also lead the platform to extent. Hence, it is the major battle for mobile hardware and software manufacturers.

UC Browser 7.2 has a big feature for sharing, which is called “Capture & Share”. When you want to insert a picture in SNS (Like Facebook), the system will hint the users to shot a photo and upload it. After choosing this option, you can use the “left” & “right” button to adjust the resolution, or switch to the front camera if you have one.
ult04ult05ult06
Brief Sum-Up: Picture Sharing Function has a high practicability in the internet, which is full of community and SNS sites. Maybe, in the next version of UC Browser, there will be a Location Sharing Function, who knows? But I really hope UC Browser could work on this.

4.   Personalized Themes Makes Life Colorful.
The personalized themes are the biggest difference between old version and new version. In the old version of UC Browser, it carried 6 theme and in UC 7.2 just 2 pre-defined themes. However, what makes me surprised is UC 7.2 supports themes downloads, and UC officially provided 9 themes in total. I downloaded 2 themes, and after clicking the “Theme Download”, the system will redirect you to the UC download page, and it will take you only 4 seconds to
download per each. After the installation, the interface of UC Browser will change automatically very fast.
ult07ult08ult09
Brief Sum-up: We can anticipate that the UC Browser 7.2 Personalized Themes Function will allow users to design its own themes. I compared this function to Opera Mini, and find that Opera Mini still adopted the embedded interface, which is lack of personalization.

5.   Flash 10 Support
Maybe Steven Jobs, the CEO of Apple, can’t imagine that when he is still quarreling with Adobe for the Flash, UC Browser from China has already released the new version to fully support Flash 10 technology to serve its 100 million users. The new version is already ready for Chinese, and not later in the future, I think UC Browser will also bring it to the International Version. With Flash 10 support, users can play community games with the same experience as what they have in PC.
ult10

Summary:
According to the “Mobile Internet Research Report” from Morgan Stanley: Mobile Internet will grow faster than PC Internet, and the scope will be out of the imagine of most of the people, because it represents the convergence of 5 major trends:
3G+SNS+Video+Internet Call + Handsets. Obviously, UC 7.2 takes 2 of these 5 keywords, which are SNS and 3G. From the function sides, I felt a lot surprise, including the entertainment, personalization, speed and operation. To be objectively, compare to the previous versions, UC Browser 7.2 made a big progress.

Testing Report Between Opera Mini 5.0, UC Browser 7.2 and Bolt 2.1

Testing Report Between Opera Mini 5.0, UC Browser 7.2 and Bolt 2.1

This review is just based on July 2010 situation, when Opera Mini 5.0 final and BOLT 2.1 are released, UC Browser (UCWEB) version 7.2 is officially released as well.
All this comparison is based on my own experience. The purpose is to introduce you the alternative choice for mobile internet surfing.

Scale used (points)

1.   Feature is missing.
2.    Feature exists but implementation is poor.
3.    Implementation of the feature is adequate.
4.    Feature is well implemented, aka it's good.
5.    Implementation of the feature is excellent.

Bolt is a Java ME based mobile browser, its rendering and processing is restricted by the
Java MIDP 2, especially in Symbian and WM OS.
Except Java based version, Opera mini could support Blackberry/Windows mobile/Android.
To UC Browser, exclude the generic Java version, the dedicated Symbian/Blackberry/Windows mobile/iPhone/Android version is all available.
But is it too much and complex for the user to download? Whatever, more choice is better.

Please see the rendering comparison below. At least, according to the speed and traffic volume tested , UC browser is the winner.

Managing bookmarks on Bolt 2 is quite simple. Bookmarks are displayed on start page for easy access. Folders can be used, and what is best is the possibility to arrange bookmarks and folders. Therefore it is actually possible to do the same as on Opera Mini: show few "speed dials" at first and then all the rest in folders. Access is easy thanks to #0 key shortcut.

Bookmark folders are finally implemented on Opera Mini 5 as well. However, bookmarks and folders can't be arranged, but they are in alphabetical order. Access to bookmarks is under menu, so several steps (clicks or finger moves) have to be taken to use bookmarks. User can however, create nine speed dials on start page. Unfortunately only small thumb nail images are displayed for speed dials. In case you have two exactly similar speed dials for the same Web site, you can only rely on your memory to distinguish them. Using speed dials and bookmarks are made simple and easy especially for touch screen phones, but this turns into disadvantage on non-touch screen devices.

Using bookmarks on UC Browser 7.2 is somewhat similar as on Bolt 2. Bookmarks can be rearranged and organized into folders. Access to bookmarks is almost just as simple as on Bolt. The bookmark can be synchronized and backup both from/to local mobile phone and server. You
could share your bookmark both by SMS and Bluetooth.

Cookie and password manager
Bolt 5p

Opera Mini 5p

UC Browser 5p

Saving passwords and using cookies is possible on Bolt 2. Keeping passwords saved is very useful since some sites just does not seem to keep login cookies saved. All private information can be cleared at once.

Opera Mini 5 gives possibility to save passwords and keep the cookies, just like Bolt 2. There's separate settings to clear passwords and cookies.

There's no password manager on UC Browser 7.2 but cookies are saved. There is a option to clear the cookies as well.

Download and upload manager
Bolt 3p

Opera Mini 4p

UC Browser 5p

Downloading and uploading works somewhat fine on Bolt 2. No special or highlights in Bolt

Downloading and uploading files on Opera Mini 5 works as well. Currently there is some server issues because uploading fails sometimes, and it has to be started again.

Some People keep on claiming UC Browser has the best file manager on J2ME browsers. According to my experience this time, it is much better than the others.
Fast speed, resume broken downloads, maximum 9 concurrent download tasks, maximum 3 downloading tasks, manually default download folder setting, and etc…
All files downloaded even deleted are remembered in download manager, so once you re-download it again, the system will remind you so that you could save your time and traffic.

Select, copy and paste text
Bolt 3p

Opera Mini 4p

UC Browser 4p

Select, copy and paste text works adequately on Bolt 2. Personally I find the Bolt's "select box" cumbersome and inaccurate.

In Opera Mini 5, complete new and improved tools to select, copy and paste text were introduced. Selecting text works almost as it does on desktop browsers. You can select and copy almost anything, and paste it exactly where you like using inline mode. Only reason why I did not
give full 5 points is lack of possibility to copy link URL.

I like very much is the possibility to copy link URL. This makes it possible to copy URL without need to open the page, but what is even more important is the possibility to copy URL addresses of PDF and other closed source format files. The copied content is stored in mobile clipboard rather than browser clipboard which can allow you to send the content by SMS or Bluetooth.

Settings preferences
Bolt 3p

Opera Mini 5p

UC Browser 4p

There are adequate selection of preferences on Bolt 2. Worth to mention is possibility to install fonts. Personally I find no use for it but I admit it can help making the UI more usable with proper choice of font used.

Opera Mini is full of useful settings. For some strange reason part of them are located on so called power user settings page.

There are plenty of preferences on UC Browser 7.2. Worth to mention are possibilities to change the shortcuts and choose the night theme (useful at night time).

Rendering

Opera Mini 5p

UC Browser 3.5p

Page rendering aka way how pages are displayed is very delicate issue and certainly a matter of personal tastes. All the comments here are certainly just my own opinions but when it comes to rendering, it's important to remind the reader about this.

Bolt 2 continues showing Web pages as true as possible. This approach has it's advantages. For example many pages and features that just does not work on any other J2ME browser works on
Bolt, and looks just the same as on desktop browsers. For example here at MyOpera I can easily access all features of my photo albums. I can edit and sort photos etc. There's also rather interesting split screen view available on Bolt, which is useful sometimes. However, I personally like Opera Mini's zoom more.

opera 02
Image 2: Links to album details and to sort MyOpera photos displayed on Bolt and UC Browser, but for some reason these links are missing on Opera Mini.

In case of Opera Mini 5, I must confess being just so used to the way it renders the pages. I don't care if pages are not always showed exactly as they are on PC browsers. Usability is the most important issue for me and if the Web site provides a page that looks nice and is easy to use, then I really don't care if mobile site is different than users on PC can see. Many Web sites have finally started to understand how important it is to offer all the same features for all users, no matter what device they use. It is perfectly acceptable to give different content for mobile phone
users, but it just should never be something less or limited compared to desktop browsers. Opera Mini 5 shows pages as I want to see them and that's all I have to care.

Rendering on UC Browser is not so good as opera mini. But I still have to say it's adequate, because at least they tried to offer a sort of desktop view. Their default setting is page view which is more fit able for the mobile with small-sized screen. In desktop view, many pages I use just looks not so good as opera mini. But on normal mode many pages are much better.

Save page
Bolt 3p

Opera Mini 3p

UC Browser 4p

Save page works just fine on Bolt 2 and it's easy to access saved pages on start page.

Save page feature works fine also on Opera Mini 5. It's easy to save pages and open them via menu. On Opera Mini 4.2 I liked the possibility to show few of the saved pages on start page. This is no longer possible on Opera Mini 5 but the lack of this feature is a question of start page features.
Except the saved URL page as opera mini and bolt, UC Browser 7.2 has an option to save the page as txt format which could save the mobile memory and easier to extract the content you like. Then you can easily copy to your word document or send SMS to your friends. After all, the content is more important than the URL, isn’t it?

Conclusion and summary
Bolt 3.55p

Opera Mini 4.27p

UC Browser 4.22p

From the point perspective, Opera mini is the most function-Rich browser with most users around the world, and actually it is!
But its leading position is facing the challenge from new mobile browser players such as Bolt and UC browser. Especially for UC browser, comparing with its 7.2.0 version, more function and optimization is deployed in version 7.2.2.Botl is good as well. But not good enough. As a java based mobile browser, the function they provided is enough for the java supported feature phone. But not for the smartphone with high processing ability and more memory. Bolt should consider how to satisfy these customers.
